frosting fluffy old fashioned

I remember as a young child anytime my mom would make a cake or baked good, she would top it with her wonderful light and fluffy homemade frosting.  It was oh so delicious!  As life went on and we got older and busier my mom rarely made treats and this wonderful frosting. We would often make pre-made mixes and used canned frosting to save on time.  Dare I say I may have even forgot about this delicious frosting!  until a few years ago while visiting my parents on a Sunday evening, my mom made a cake and topped it with this Fluffy frosting!  All of those childhood memories came floating back.  I had my mom give me the recipe so I could top all of my own dessert’s with this childhood favorite.

While looking over the frosting recipe I realized it was like nothing I had seen before.  Don’t let it the recipe discourage you from making this frosting it is totally worth it.  First gather your ingredients: Milk, flour, sugar, butter, vegetable shortening, and vanilla.

You will start by pouring 1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of flour into a sauce pot.

frosting milk and flour

Cook the milk and flour over medium to heat stirring until it forms into a paste.  I thought this was a really interesting step and that the recipe included flour.  I now believe this is what makes the frosting so light and fluffy.  After the flour and milk has formed a paste remove from heat and let the paste cool.

After the paste has cooled place it in a bowl or mixer and add 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup of butter that is at room temperature, 1/2 cup vegetable shortening and 1 tsp. vanilla.  Whip all of the ingredients together until lumps dissolve and is becomes a light and fluffy frosting.
