Add a Cushion to your Bar Stools
It all began with a Sunday paper! I was browsing through the Kohl’s Ad and came across these turquoise bar stools. I wanted them No, needed to have them! The next morning I went to 2 Kohl’s near me. Of course they didn’t have that beautiful turquoise color that would match my kitchen so perfect. The truth is I really did need a change! I have had these high back bar stools for a few years. I purchased them at a garage sale for $5 and painted the turquoise. I have loved them they are sturdy and take the abuse for my kids really well. To be honest they just don’t fit the space. They are so big and bulky, you can’t even access my fridge if someone is sitting in the seat closest to the fridge. It was definitely time for a change. After I could find the stools in the kohl’s stores closest to me. I logged on line to see what stores had some, as I scrolled through the list. I kept re-reading out of stock!!! Of course they would have every other color expect the turquoise! I could have ordered the online and had waited to have them shipped. But, the Violet from the old school Charlie and Chocolate factory came out and yelled I want it I want it now!!!
Mom my has had these saddle bar stools kicking around in her basement for a few years. I asked her if I could have 2 of them for this project. Next step was finding the perfect fabric. Originally in my mind I was going to recreate the exact same stool from Kohl’s. I went on the hunt to find some turquoise vinyl fabric. Once again I struck out there was no such luck in finding the color. While I was at Hobby Lobby I decided to rummage through the remnants bin. I found this darling geometric teal print. I fell in love with it. I grab the fabric remnant, clear vinyl and some foam and headed out to pay.
First I cut and pieced together the foam to match the size of the seat on the stools. I used this spray adhesive to glue all of the foam pieces together. Next, I cut the fabric large enough to cover the foam and wrap around to the bottom of the stool. Then I cut the clear vinyl the same size as the fabric. I placed the fabric on the floor then centered the foam on the fabric, next I tipped the stool upside down and centered it onto the foam. I pushed on the legs of the stool to wrap and staple the fabric around the bottom of the stool. Then I placed the clear vinyl on the floor and repeated stapling it on the bottom of the stool. I was going to add decorative brads at the base of the stools. I love the pattern so much, I decided to leave them just how they were. After I had gathered all my supplies cutting, gluing and stapling the cushions on only took about 45 minutes total. These was such a quick and easy project! I am so happy to have the extra space!

I love these! I once fixed the cushions on my chairs but hubby said they had to be black. I like you color choice better.

This is a great tutorial. I have some bar stools that need cushions and I might just be able to make some now.

Thanks for posting this. I actually found your page by searching for instructions on how to add a cushion to a stool for a different project. Looking at your high-back bar stools made me realize my bar chairs are also too big for my kitchen space. I’m on the hunt for three small stools like yours. It was Veruca Salt not Violet that sang “I want it now”. I only know because she was my favorite worst character. Thanks for the instructions!
