Bow & Arrow for kids! Inspired by Hunger games

Two of my daughters have really been into the Hunger Games books & movie.  I read the books a few years ago and kept trying to get my teenagers to read the books. Finally my son jumped on board then my daughters.  When the movie released Myself, my hubby and my kids were all front and center at the movie!  Now I know some parents disapprove of the books / movie but each to their own and I think it is no worse then what the have seen and learned in school regarding the holocaust, wars, Gladiators etc.  They also know it is fiction..

So, with that being said on to the inspiration and fun of the movie!  My daughter soon came home and had an idea – To make her own Bow and Arrow. She was inspired by Katniss and her talent to shoot a bow and arrow.   She searched the wooded area near our home and found a few branches on the ground that might work.  She came home and googled how to make a bow and arrow.  She shaved off all the exterior of the branch until it was smooth wood.  She then took some oil to soften up the wood & carved out notches at the top of the branch.  She then took string and pulled it tight and tied knots to hold the string into place.   She found some of my fun colored zebra masking tape and made a spot for the arrow to rest when she pulled it back.

I watched her and was completely impressed to watch it work! It has supplied hours and hours of play time for my girls!  They have shot those arrows in my back yard for hours on end.  It has turned into more of a game of who’s will go the furthest.  The end of the bow is not sharp it too is just a branch so I don’t worry to much about it hurting anyone.   I wouldn’t recommend it for smaller children but for preteens & early teenagers it has been a great tool to get them out of the house.   I often see my daughter bring her’s inside to work on it & make it look nicer.

I like this too because it didn’t require me to buy anything it used items that were found outside or in my garage!
