DIY – Step by Step Handmade Wood Trellis for grapevines tutorial
Last summer we put in our yard. We had moved into our house the first part of October of 2010 and didn’t really start on our yard until April of 2011. My husband installed our sprinkling system, laid our sod, did curbing and added trees as fast as I could find trees on our local classified free ads. What a gem! Towards the end of the summer I decided I wanted some grapes. I planted two different kinds of grapes and realized after a month how fast those suckers grow! The tiny PVC pipe garden trellis I had was not going to hold up. SEE UPDATED PHOTOS BELOW!!
Over the winter I convinced my husband to make me a trellis / arbor to allow those grapes to grow. I wanted to get this done before they bloomed and started growing so fast again. So he set to work!~
Purchasing six 8 ft. pressure treated posts made for a quick start! 4 of those pressure treated posts for the actual posts of the trellis and 2 of those to cut on an angle 4 times. For the top he used 12 4″x4″x8′ long posts.
He used 6″ lag screws that are made specifically for this lumber so they don’t rust out in the weather.
Once each main post was completely finished he dug 4 holes 7′ on center so the trellis would be approximately 23′ overall in length. He used two bags of concrete for each hole. Placing the post in on top of some of the concrete and then pouring the rest of the concrete around the post he then filled each hole with water and let the posts set up for a few days. After they were steady enough he added mor pressure treaded timber to the top of the trellis to give it a finished look!
Please remember that my yard is fairly new and a work in progress! Therefore there isn’t a lot of plants in this back flower bed. You can see my “yet to bloom” Grapes that I cut down right at the base of the trellis! I cannot wait until they start growing fast again! This time I can wrap them up the trellis! I am super excited!
Here are some updated photos 5 years later! My first two grape bushes on the East end died the second year from a hard winter so I had to re-plant those. but we have reaped the benefits of delicious grapes.
As you can see over the past 5 years since we made the trellis my yard has sure filled in. I have never treated the trellis since it was built. It has held up nicely in the hard winters!
I’ve had many people comment on how beautiful it is. I can honestly say that the photos don’t do it justice!

That looks so amazing! I am horrible at growing things or else I’d totally steal this for the empty space we now have where two of our bushes & our apple tree died! {told you, can’t keep it alive.}

That’s really beefy! What varieties of grapes did you plant?

Is there any way you could include the measurements? I’m assuming those are 6×4’s and 4×4’s at the top, what is the measurement of the support beam and the length of the top beams? How many 4×4’s to you have at the top? Are those bolts as well as screws? And, finally, how about a picture now that it has been a while? I want to see your beautiful grapes!

I would like to know the the measurement of the angled supports? I assume the 4×4 supports are 4ft and what is the over hang on the back and front?
Thanks

How has this held up to the grapes? I am thinking that this would be something awesome for my grapes as well…any recent pictures you could send my way? Thanks! Chris – Omaha

Hello!! What a beautiful simple trellis. I was wondering whether you could help map out the dimensions of the cuts and angles? You so helpfully added the materials needed, but there wasn’t any mention of the supporting posts for the top portion? what are the posts? Also, how deep are the holes that were dug? Meaning after the placement how tall is the trellis? Sorry for all of the questions, but any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
