OZ The Great and Powerful – Movie Review

How hard is it to kill a wicked witch?

Last night my family and I had the opportunity to view a pre screening of Disney’s newest movie OZ The Great And Powerful. From the director of the Spiderman Trilogy and the producer of Alice in Wonderland they bring you into a land of fantasy………. The land of OZ.

Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Disney captures the battle for OZ with an all star cast including: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz & Zach Braff. If you are holding onto the thought of the 1930’s movie version of the wizard of oz let go of that before you go to this movie because quite frankly it is nothing like that. Through a little more investigation I did find out that the author L. Frank Baum wrote many books that pertained to the original wizard of oz so there was a lot more written about the land of OZ then what I knew of.

Disney has added their own twists and turns into the movie and what was even more fun is that we got to view it in 3-D. So, at times we were jumping in our seats. I was surprised at how the film really didn’t pickup any of the original characters of OZ such as Dorothy, The tin man, the lion or the scarecrow. Instead Disney focused on the “Wizard” and how he would save OZ. Like Dorothy the wizard does follow the path of the yellow brick road to fight the wicked witch and along the way he not only meets one witch but three! So which one is truely the wicked witch?

I would definately say this is more of a kids/preteen film with charaters such as the wizards flying monkey “Finely” and a small china doll they pick up along the way. These characters make it more of an enjoyable film for the younger viewers and you can’t help but to fall in love with them. I like the fact that the movie is rated PG so I don’t have to worry about what my children are viewing. Hat’s off to Disney for trying to create cleaner films for our youth.

I must say though that I did enjoy the ending battle between good and evil. It was very creative and left me with a smile.
