Repairing my lawn after Winter damage plus a fun kids craft using Scotts EZ Seed

I love this time of year and watching everything come into bloom. I also LOVE working in my yard and on my lawn. There is something therapeutic about digging in the dirt and smelling the fresh blooming flowers. I think my love of my yard came from my mother. W

e spent a lot of time out in our yard growing up, we would plant a garden, weed, plant flowers and enjoy swinging from our big huge trees! As an adult I still want to be able to run barefoot through my back yard and enjoy my thick blanket of grass.

After the snow melts every year we are left with a lawn that has damage caused by Voles. A Vole is a small rodent resembling a mouse that burrows down into your lawn to keep warm during the winter months. When all the snow is gone you can see pathways where these Voles get under the top layer of grass. The Voles tend to destroy the grass. We’ve found an easy way to assist in repairing the damage that the Voles do to our lawn! Even if you don’t have a Vole problem like we do this is also a great way to thicken up your lawn each spring and repair any bare spots you may have in your lawn.

First you’ll want to head to your local store that carries Scotts® EZ Seed® Sun and Shade. I’ve been able to find it in the Lawn and garden section on the end cap of a row at my local Walmart. Fall and Spring are the best times to plant EZ Seed® because the seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F. So now that it is Spring it is the best time to repair those spots.

The seed can cover up to 85 square feet but if you find you don’t need that much I have a fun creative craft that you can create with your kids towards the end of this post using the Scotts EZ Seed.
Once home you’ll want to prep the area that you want to repair. I also have an area of Crab grass I plan on digging that out using a shovel and loosening  up the dirt underneath with a rake.

After you prep the area that you are working on; the next step is to apply the seed. By following the instructions on the container of Scotts Seed you’ll have the best results.

Sprinkle the area with seed so it is mostly covered but leave a little dirt exposed as the seed expands when watering. Make sure that each seed has contact with the soil. Once the seed is down and in place use a watering can and water the area where the seed is. Making sure all of the seed is wet and the soil underneath. While your Scotts® EZ Seed® is growing try to make sure that the ground is never hard or dried out. If the ground turns a lighter brown color that is your indication it is drying out.  It’s time to add more water!  Always remember sunny areas dry out faster than shady areas. You may need to water those areas more often.

Let the seed grow until its several inches long before mowing! Enjoy your lush new grass!
