DIY Rustic Re-purposed Wood Shutter With Hooks

I have had this old Wood Shutter sitting in my garage for several years. I purchased several shutters at a garage sale for $2.00 and then found more! Both Krystal and I had 6 shutters for under $5.00 over the years I have used the shutters for various projects. I’ve made a Noel sign for Christmas and a Flag shutter for the 4th of July.  But WAIT!! Who could forget the Thanksgiving Shutter ??

As you can see I have used Shutters for each holiday but I had one full length one left so I wanted to create something for my sister. This originally was meant to be for her back hall to hang coats on. But, the shutter is too long for her hall!  Keep reading and I’ll show you what I did instead.

As you can see I have used Shutters for each holiday but I had one full length one left so I wanted to create something for my sister. This originally was meant to be a shutter with hooks to hang coats on. Bringing it to her house we soon realized it didn’t fit on her back hall wall.

I painted the old shutter from black to white using white indoor wall paint that I had left over. I did not remove the black paint underneath as I want the shabby look.

Next, I let it dry and picked up some darling knobs at Hobby Lobby for only $1.50 a piece.  Look at the photo below of a close up of the knobs! Add another coat of paint and let dry.

Once dry – sand the edges of the shutter and lightly sand the shutter slats to give the Wood shutter a rustic look and feel. Using the air compressor to remove all dust from the sanding. You can see the rustic sanded look in the picture below:

Here is a final photo of the shutter looking down from my sisters stairs. The lighting isn’t the best but I am sure you get the concept! I still believe the shutter needs something more – maybe a saying above it or perhaps some small wreaths on the slats? What else would you add to the shutter so it doesn’t look so plain?

Overall, the shutter is absolutely darling in her front entry and I am in love with how it goes with her home. Wishing I lived closer because I could decorate her home all day long!
