Repurposing an old door for the front porch
I obtained this old door through a friend’s friend. Ha-ha! That probably sounds a little confusing but somehow it ended up at my house and I thought to myself “This has potential”. Although, I didn’t know what I would end up doing with it once I got it all done I knew it would still be darling!
First, I wiped and sanded the entire door down then wiped it again. Then I puttied the holes, dings and dents and let dry overnight.
I then sanded the putty spots and smoothed them out. I next, taped off the center of the door and painted it gray. No, I did not put down a primer paint beforehand.
Once the gray paint was dry I then painted the edges white and let them also dry. This was perhaps another day or two. I would have to say prepping the door to look better took the longest part of all of this.
I measured the inset part of the door, (the part I painted gray). You will need measurements of the door inset for the next part. At this time I went to my computer and using some old cardstock I cut out a template spelling the word “Home” to put in the center of the door inset.
Painting inside of each letter of the template using white paint. Once again using the tape measure, I measured in between each template to make sure the letters are aligned right on the inset of the door. I took a small wreath I purchased off of Amazon and used it in the center as the home for “O”
Securing the wreath with a screw and wire so it stays put in the center. I kept the knob on the door to keep some of the old charm. Look how cute this is!!
I gave it to my sister to display on her front porch.
