Every spring I feel the need to freshen up my homes style and the smell of my home. I like to have my home feel crisp and clean. Since I cannot change out my furniture this spring I decided to create some stenciled pillow covers. Join me as I walk you through my Spring Fresh Flowers Pillow Tutorial.

As you can see I selected a fun bright colored fabric for my pillow. To start with this tutorial picking the fabric is one of the number one things you’ll do. Once your fabric is picked you will want to wash, clean and press the fabric. since I am freshening up my home I want my Fresh Flowers pillow to not only look new and fresh but to smell clean and fresh also.

purex crystals

My local Walmart  is the closest store to my house so I went and purchased some Purex® Crystals. Pre-washing the fabric especially using the Purex Crystals help my pillows to stay fresh for 12 weeks! That basically gets me through all of the summer months. I have a hard time choosing which scent to choose because Purex offers so many options from three different lines: Classic, Aromatherapy and Botanicals.  By using the Purex® Crystals they allow scents of floral blends, citrus and essential oils to be infused into the fabric.

The lovely line of Purex® Crystals is not only affordable but it can be found in the laundry isle with ease at your local Walmart store, and it is now on rollback.  I chose the Tahitian breeze and Cherry blossom & Ginger scents from the  Aromatherapy and Botanicals lines, Purex Crystals provide a great scent at a great price!

Once I pre-washed my fabric I ironed it so there would be no creases or wrinkles in my fabric. Before I forget you can also pick up a pillow form at your local Walmart to use inside of the pillow cover. I chose a 12″x12″ pillow form.

Lay your freshly laundered fabric out and choose the desired size of pillow you would like. I will walk you through the steps of how to create your own envelope style cover. First lay out the fabric on your cutting mat or surface. You’ll want to measure your pillow inserts to determine the size of fabric you will need to cut. Using a rotary cutter and mat cut 1 square that measures 12 1/2″ by 12 1/2″. . Next cut two pieces of fabric into 9″ by 12″ sections. These will go on the back of your pillow to make an envelope style sham. If you have read any of my past posts you will know that this is my favorite method.

Take your top square and the 2 backing pieces and place right sides of your fabric together, your first backing piece.  Then layer your second one on top to create the envelope.  Pin all of these layers in place.  Use a lot of pins!!!  Then sew all four sides of your sham. Once all four sides are sewn together flip the pillow sham inside out and you will have a pillow cover. At this point iron the sham until smooth and set aside.

You can create your own template on your personal cutitng machine.  I chose to create a flower template out of butcher paper. butcher paper works great for cutting out templates because you can iron it right onto your fabric and it stays while you use fabric paint to paint the pillow.  I found these free flower cut files at Webster pages, It was easy enough to iron the butcher paper templates on to the pillow cover and fill in the design with fabric paint.
